Digital Planner Not Working? Fix Common Import Errors

Most digital planner import problems come down to one of four causes: the file is still zipped, the PDF was split or opened page-by-page (which breaks hyperlinks), the app is in writing mode so links do not respond, or the download did not finish. Each has a quick fix, and none of them means your planner is broken. This guide walks through every common error and exactly how to solve it.

Work through the sections in order, or jump to the problem that matches what you are seeing. In almost every case you will be planning again within five minutes.

Quick Diagnosis: What Is Going Wrong?

Start here to find your fix fast:

What you see Likely cause Jump to fix
File will not open or import at all Still a ZIP file, or incomplete download Fix 1 and Fix 2
Planner imports but taps do not jump anywhere App is in writing mode Fix 3
Links do nothing even in read mode PDF was split or flattened on import Fix 4
Pages look blank, garbled, or cut off Corrupted or partial download Fix 2
Stickers will not import or lose transparency Wrong file type or wrong import method Fix 5
Cannot find the downloaded file Saved to an unexpected location Fix 6

Fix 1: Why Won't My Planner File Open? (It Is Probably a ZIP)

Many planners are delivered as a ZIP folder because they include extras like covers or sticker sheets. Note apps cannot import a ZIP directly, and this is the single most common "my planner will not import" cause.

On iPad:

  1. Open the Files app and find the downloaded ZIP.
  2. Tap it once. iPadOS extracts it into a folder right next to it.
  3. Open the folder and import the PDF inside it into your note app.

On Android or Samsung tablets:

  1. Open your file manager app (such as My Files on Samsung).
  2. Tap the ZIP and choose Extract.
  3. Import the extracted PDF into your note app.

If a "ZIP" refuses to extract, re-download it first. A partially downloaded archive will not open.

Fix 2: Why Are My Planner Pages Blank or Missing?

Blank pages, garbled graphics, an error on opening, or a planner that stops halfway usually mean the download did not complete. Large hyperlinked planners can be sizable files, and a flaky connection can quietly truncate them.

  1. Delete the broken copy from both your note app and your files.
  2. Go back to your purchase email or account downloads page.
  3. Re-download on a solid Wi-Fi connection.
  4. Check that the file size looks reasonable (a full planner is typically several megabytes or more, not a few kilobytes).
  5. Import the fresh copy.

If you have lost your download link, contact the shop you bought from. If that is us, send a note with your order number and we will re-send it.

Fix 3: Why Do My Hyperlinks Not Work When I Tap Them?

This is the most reported "problem" in digital planning, and it is usually not a problem at all. In GoodNotes, Notability, Noteshelf, and similar apps, hyperlinks respond only when the app is in read-only or viewing mode. While a pen, highlighter, or eraser is selected, the app treats your tap as a mark, not a click.

The fix:

  1. Look at your toolbar and switch to read-only or view mode.
  2. Tap a tab or date. It should jump instantly.
  3. Toggle back to your pen to write, and back again to navigate.

Every app has its own toggle, but the principle is identical across all of them: navigate in reading mode, write in editing mode. For a full walkthrough of how this works in GoodNotes specifically, see our guide to using hyperlinks in GoodNotes.

Fix 4: Why Do Links Fail Even in Read-Only Mode?

If you are definitely in reading mode and taps still do nothing, the hyperlinks themselves were most likely stripped during import. This happens when:

  • The PDF was imported page-by-page instead of as one document. Links point to other pages in the same file, so separated pages have nowhere to link to.
  • Individual pages were extracted or re-exported from another app, which often flattens the file and removes link data.
  • The planner was opened through an app or converter that does not preserve links, then forwarded into your note app.

The fix: go back to the original PDF you downloaded and import it fresh, as a single complete document, directly into your note app. Do not route it through an editor, converter, or "print to PDF" step along the way. Our import guide for GoodNotes, Notability, and more shows the correct import path for each app.

One more note: pages you add or duplicate yourself will not carry hyperlinked tabs. That is normal, and the original pages keep working.

Fix 5: Why Won't My Stickers Import Properly?

Sticker problems have their own flavors:

  • Stickers arrive inside a ZIP. Extract first, exactly as in Fix 1.
  • White boxes around stickers. You may be using JPG versions. Stickers should be PNG files, which support transparent backgrounds. Use the PNG copies included with your pack.
  • The sticker file will not import as a document. Sticker sheets provided as a PDF import like any planner. Individual PNGs are usually added onto a page (via copy and paste or your app's image tool) rather than opened as their own document.
  • GoodNotes-format sticker books. Files made specifically for GoodNotes open in GoodNotes but not in other apps. If you use Notability or Samsung Notes, use the PNG or PDF versions instead.

Fix 6: Where Did My Download Go?

If the file seems to have vanished after downloading:

  1. On iPad, open the Files app and check the Downloads folder under "On My iPad" or iCloud Drive. Safari sends downloads there by default.
  2. On Android, open your file manager and check the Download folder.
  3. Search by name, or search ".pdf" and ".zip" to surface recent files.
  4. Check your browser's download list, which shows where each file was saved.

Once found, move the file somewhere memorable, and keep a backup in cloud storage so you can always re-import a clean original.

How Do You Avoid Import Problems Next Time?

A little setup prevents nearly all of these issues:

  1. Download over reliable Wi-Fi, not a spotty mobile connection.
  2. Unzip before importing, every time.
  3. Import the planner as one complete PDF, straight from Files into your note app.
  4. Keep the original file backed up in cloud storage.
  5. Learn your app's read-only toggle on day one.

Planners built with clean, standard PDF hyperlinks import the most reliably. Every planner in our planner collection is tested in GoodNotes, Notability, and other major note apps before release.

FAQ

Why is my digital planner not showing up in GoodNotes after import?

Give it a moment on large files, then check your library's recent documents and any folders. If it is truly absent, the import likely failed silently, often because the file was still zipped or incomplete. Extract or re-download, then import again from the Files app.

Do digital planner hyperlinks work in every note app?

They work in any app that supports tappable links in imported PDFs, including GoodNotes, Notability, Noteshelf, and Samsung Notes. Basic PDF readers and some annotation apps ignore link data, so if links fail everywhere, test the file in a second app before assuming the planner is faulty.

Can I fix a planner whose hyperlinks are already broken?

You cannot repair stripped links inside the note app, but you do not need to. Delete the broken copy and re-import the original PDF as a single document. The original download always has its links intact, which is why keeping a backup copy matters.

Why does my planner look different than the listing photos?

Check that you imported the correct file. Many planners ship with several versions in one folder, such as Monday-start and Sunday-start, or portrait and landscape. Open the folder from your download and pick the version you want before importing.

My planner worked yesterday but not today. What changed?

Almost certainly the mode you are in. If taps stopped navigating, you are in writing mode; if your pen stopped writing, you are in read-only mode. Toggle the mode and everything should behave again. If the document itself will not open, restart the app and re-import your backup copy.
