How to Choose a 2027 Digital Planner (Buying Guide)

To choose a 2027 digital planner, decide first whether you want dated pages (the year is printed in, so you open it and start) or undated pages (you fill in the dates, and the file works for any year). Then check five things before you pay: that the tabs are genuinely hyperlinked, that the file is a PDF your app can open, how many pages and templates you actually get, whether stickers are included, and what the refund policy says about digital goods. This guide walks through each of those, compares the three planner styles you will see on sale, and explains why buying in October or November is easier than buying in January.
If you are searching for a 2027 planner in September, you are not early. The people who plan January properly are usually the ones who bought before December.
Dated or Undated: Which Is Right for 2027?
This is the first fork in the road, and it decides most of what follows.
A dated planner has the real 2027 calendar printed into it: the month grids are correct, the weekly spreads are labelled, and the date hyperlinks line up. You import it and start writing. The tradeoff is that it expires when 2028 arrives.
An undated planner leaves the date fields blank for you to fill in. You can start in the middle of March or duplicate the file and begin again from scratch. The tradeoff is the writing: filling in a year of date boxes is about twenty minutes of work, and some people never get around to it.
A simple way to decide:
- Choose dated if you want zero setup, plan by calendar date, and like a clean break at year end.
- Choose undated if you plan in bursts, want one file to last several years, or are buying mid-year.
- Choose both if you can. A dated planner for appointments and an undated notebook for projects do not compete.
One thing worth saying plainly: if the yearly repurchase of a dated file bothers you, undated is a completely legitimate answer, and we sell those too.
What Should You Check Before Buying a 2027 Digital Planner?
Digital planners are cheap enough that people buy on impulse, then discover the file does not do what they assumed. Six checks take about two minutes and prevent almost every disappointment.
- Are the tabs actually hyperlinked? This is the single biggest quality difference. A hyperlinked planner lets you tap "March" and land on March; a flat PDF makes you scroll through 128 pages to find it. The listing should say hyperlinked and show the tab bar in the previews. If the word appears nowhere, assume it is not.

Does it work in your app? Standard PDFs open in GoodNotes, Notability, Noteshelf, Xodo, Flexcil, and Samsung Notes, which covers almost everyone. Be careful with planners sold as
.goodnotesfiles, which lock you into one app. - How many pages and templates do you get? Page count alone is weak, because a file can pad it with 200 blank lined sheets. Template count tells you how many genuinely different layouts you get. A planner with 128 pages and 28 templates beats one with 300 pages and 6.
- What file format arrives? Most planners download as a ZIP containing a PDF and, often, PNG stickers. That is normal. You unzip it in the Files app before importing. If the listing does not mention format at all, ask before buying.
- Are stickers included or sold separately? Both are fine, but you want to know. A bundle with sticker PNGs saves a second purchase; a planner sold bare is not worse, just priced differently.
- What is the refund policy on digital goods? Digital downloads are usually non-refundable once the files have been accessed, which is standard across the industry, including here. That is exactly why previews matter: look at every one before you buy, and if a page you care about is not pictured, ask first.

Dated planners split further, into academic year and calendar year. Here is how the three styles compare.

One note on this table: an 18-month planner (say, July 2026 through December 2027) is a useful hybrid, because it covers an academic year and then carries you through the following calendar year. That is why the format is common on next-year releases.
How Do You Move from a 2026 Planner to a 2027 One?
Migration sounds like a chore and takes about fifteen minutes. Do it once, in a single sitting, before the year turns.
- Import the new planner first. Get the 2027 file into your app and named clearly, something like "2027 Planner". Do this while your 2026 planner is still open and in use, so you can work between the two.
- Carry forward the fixed dates. Copy across anything that repeats: birthdays, anniversaries, renewal dates, recurring bills, standing appointments. This is the tedious part, and the part that makes January feel calm.
- Move your unfinished work, not your guilt. Anything still open in your last few weekly spreads moves across. Anything you have been rolling over since August is probably not happening, and it is allowed to stay in 2026.
- Copy your trackers, reset the data. Habit trackers, reading logs, and savings challenges usually have a fresh page in the new file. Copy the categories you actually used and drop the ones you never filled in.
- Archive the old file, do not delete it. Export your 2026 planner as a PDF, save it to cloud storage, and move the notebook into an "Archive" folder in your app. You will want to look something up in April, and two planners on your home screen is how people end up writing in the wrong year.
If you decorate, leave the new planner plain for the first two weeks. Get the structure working before you make it pretty.
When Is the Best Time to Buy a 2027 Planner?
October and November, and the reason is not a sales tactic. It is about what you can actually do with the file.
Buying in October or November gives you:
- Time to test before it matters. You learn where the hyperlinks live in a low-stakes month instead of on January 1st.
- A running start on December. Most 18-month planners open before January, so you can plan the holidays in the same file you will use all next year.
- The full selection. Popular covers and themed editions are complete now; some designs get retired before spring.
- Sale pricing. Autumn and Black Friday are when next-year planners are discounted, not January.
Buying in January gives you: a planner you are setting up during the exact week you were hoping to be organised. It still works. It is just harder than it needs to be.
An honest counterpoint: if you buy planners in bursts of enthusiasm and abandon them by February, buying earlier does not fix that. Buy an undated file instead, start it on an ordinary Tuesday, and see whether the habit survives two weeks before you spend more.

FAQ
Is it too early to buy a 2027 planner in September?
No. September through November is the normal buying window, and the easiest time to buy: you get the full range of designs, autumn sale pricing, and quiet weeks to set the file up before January. Many next-year planners are 18-month files that open before January anyway, so you can start immediately.
Can I use a 2026 planner for 2027?
Only if it is undated. A dated 2026 planner has the wrong day-of-week alignment for 2027, so the grids will not match the real calendar. An undated planner has no such problem: duplicate the file, fill in the new dates, and carry on.
Are digital planners refundable if I do not like it?
Usually not, and that is standard for digital downloads across every shop, ours included: once the files have been accessed, they cannot be returned. This is why previews matter. Look at every one before buying, and if the page you care about is not shown, ask the seller. A shop that will not answer before the sale is telling you something.
Do I need GoodNotes, or will a free app work?
A free app works. Samsung Notes is free and preinstalled on Galaxy tablets, and Xodo is free on both platforms; both open PDFs and follow hyperlinks. GoodNotes and Notability are paid, and you are paying for pen feel, sticker tools, and organisation. Start free, upgrade if you hit limits.
How many pages does a good digital planner need?
Fewer than you think. Look at template count instead: somewhere between 20 and 30 distinct layouts is generous for a yearly planner. Beyond that you are usually paying for filler pages you will never open. A 128-page file with 28 real templates beats a 400-page file that repeats six layouts.
